Latin Dancing

Latin dances are generally faster paced than the ballroom, they have a less formal hold but include more expressive body language and hip movement.  Most latin dances rarely involve stepping on the heel.  There are many types of originating from Latin America - the main ones taught at JanSu are;

Sizziling Samba - arriving in Europe in the late 1930's, this dance is typically difficult to master, but the samba is well worth the effort as it encompases the feel and rhythms from the Brazilian street carnivals. Danced to 2/4 timing, this lively dance revolves around a pelvic bounce action and expresses a joy and exhauberance which is infectious.

Cheeky Cha Cha - this party dance is a relative newcomer to the ballroom, only achieving popularity in the 1950's. Danced to 4/4 music it can be applied to many different genres making it very versatile. The key is a cuban motion which involves correct footwork and straightening legs to invoke the pronounced hip movment.

Romantic Rumba - this is a slow, sensuous dance it has been recognised as the spirit and soul of latin dancing since the early 1900's. With many of the figures adopting a 'tease and run' theme between partners.  Like the cha cha, the cuban motion is critical but the rumba has a much more intense feel.  It is danced to 4/4 music but revolves around only 3 steps making the timing tricky.

Passionate Paso Doble - this is the most dramatic of the latin dances and differs from the others in that it progresses around the floor, it does not require hip action and does include heels! It is also the exception to the rule in that it originates from France rather than Latin America - depicting the man as a Spanish Bull fighter and the lady as his cape.  It gained popularity it the 1930's and is very theatrical, requiring a certain arogance and dignity.

Jolly Jive - developed from the Jitterbug and Swing dances in the 1940's, the Jive is danced to rapid tempo 4/4 time music. A lively dance which inlcudes sharp kicks and flicks, the Jive requires high levels of energy and pumping leg actions. This is the fastest of the latin dances and is a fun stamina test!
